    Default EC-400 tool change problem

We are experiencing some problems with our tool changer. The tool change arm will stick in the position waiting for the tool to be ejected from the spindle. The only thing that we can definately say affects it is heat. On hotter days (80+) we experience this with no alarm. The arm will just stick there and resume on its own at any random time.

Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this and any possible solutions?

    Thanks,
    Wes

Yes this happens. Most of the time it is due to the heat of the tool and if you are doing very heavy cuts. You can lube up the taper Tri-flow oil or something of that sort on the taper of the tool. This will help release it. I often do a tool change right away to empty the spindle when I am done using it.

It could also be a sensor or switch that tells the control when the arm is in the right position. It might be set on the edge where sometimes it makes right away or it takes some time to make the switch. Clean all or your switches free of oil and debris.

You could also check to make sure you have good contact on the spindle taper. Blue up a new tool and make sure you got nice even contact all the way around and up and down the taper. You may need to regrind the spindle taper. You can also check your drawbar pressure. Too much pressure will pull the tool real tight into the spindle and make it hard to release.

Is it always the same tool or random?

It is definately a random issue. The machine has a brand new spindle. Problem was before and after the spindle change. Does not seem to be caused by tool heat but cabinet heat seems to affect it. Haas says they
have no other machine with our issue and I just find this hard to believe. The sensors are one area we have not attempted yet due to the downtime but we may have to make the sacrifice.

    Thanks again,
    Wes

Hmmm…that’s odd. I would have suspected heat in the spindle. If it is a new spindle then I would definitely check the drawbar tension.

If you can find the rung in the ladder that handles the tool change you may be able to see where it is hanging up or what it is waiting for.
