Default Ballscrew/encoder resolution calculations when turning off the scale

What I am looking for is a procedure or best practice to calculate what values should be set at when changing a machine to use the encoder instead of the scale. Many times in troubleshooting a machine that has scales I would like to turn them off either permanently or temporarily for troubleshooting or waiting for parts. I have done this many times on Fanuc machines and can almost always at least turn them off and use the encoder for troubleshooting purposes, but can not get the resolution right without info from the builder. Is there any easy way to do this in the field, or recommendations, typical information or ways to make good estimates and not have to wait for info from the builder? I've never built a hobby CNC or anything from scratch yet, but I am sure there must be some possible standard rules that may apply.

Any thoughts or help is appreciated, Thanks

Petro
